Celebrating the contribution of older people in our communities

Every year on 1 October, communities around the world mark the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP). Established by the United Nations, the day celebrates the invaluable contribution older people make to society while highlighting the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population.

As New Zealanders live longer than ever before, we have an opportunity to rethink what it means to age well. Living longer is something to celebrate, but it also raises important questions. How do we stay connected? How do we keep learning? How do we remain active, independent and involved in our communities? How do we ensure older people are valued, respected and included?

These are questions that guide Age Concern Auckland's work every day.

Supporting older people to age well

At Age Concern Auckland, we believe growing older should never mean becoming isolated or overlooked. Our services are designed to help older people remain independent, connected and confident while continuing to participate in the life of their communities.

Every day, our team and volunteers work alongside older Aucklanders through services including:

  • Elder Abuse Response
  • Friendship Visiting
  • Social connection programmes and coffee groups
  • Steady As You Go® strength and balance classes
  • Digital literacy support
  • Counselling and social work
  • Community education and advocacy

Whether it's helping someone learn new digital skills, supporting an older person experiencing loneliness, or providing specialist advice during difficult circumstances, every service contributes to the same goal: helping older people live with dignity, purpose and connection.

2026 Theme: The Age of Longevity

Each year the United Nations announces a theme for the International Day of Older Persons.

The 2026 theme, "The Age of Longevity," encourages us to look beyond longer life expectancy and consider how we can create communities where people continue to thrive throughout later life.

Longevity is about more than simply adding years to life. It is about ensuring those years are healthy, meaningful and connected. It means creating environments where older people can continue learning, volunteering, sharing their knowledge, maintaining friendships and participating in decisions that affect their lives.

At Age Concern Auckland, we see inspiring examples of this every day through the older people who attend our programmes, support one another, volunteer their time and continue making valuable contributions to their communities.

Join us in celebrating positive ageing

Throughout October, we'll be sharing stories that celebrate the achievements, resilience and experiences of older people across Auckland.

You can support positive ageing by:

  • Taking part in one of our programmes or community groups.
  • Learning more about the issues affecting older people.
  • Checking in on an older neighbour, friend or family member.
  • Volunteering your time or supporting our work.
  • Challenging ageism whenever you see or hear it.

Together, we can build a community where every older person feels valued, respected and included.
