What Age Concern Auckland Does — and Why It Matters More Than Ever

You may not have heard of Age Concern Auckland, but Age Concern has been around in one form or another since 1948, helping older people aged sixty-five plus navigate the difficulties and tensions that can sometimes eclipse our golden years. Age Concern Auckland was established by the mid-50s out of a need to provide services for those in the Auckland area.

We are a group of caring individuals with diverse specialties and skills who cater to various needs. For some older people, it’s about finding more social connection or combating a decline in health; for others, it may involve addressing serious issues like elder abuse. Whatever the problem, it is heartening to know there is an organisation in the Auckland region dedicated to protecting the rights of older people.

Welcome to our new blog — a space where we share practical advice, stories, and support for older people and their caregivers. We aim to provide you with information on a range of relevant topics, and where our services do not cover the help required, we can guide you to other trusted organisations and services. We are committed to improving communication and making it easier for you to find the resources you need. As we expand our team, we increasingly cater to a wider range of communities, providing information and services in multiple languages.

Below is a list of our current services. As we continually update and review our offerings, feel free to email, phone, or check our website for the most up-to-date list. You can also find services listed on our website here.

Our team comprises staff, volunteers, and community partners, all of whom are vital to providing the level of care and dedication we strive for. Among our staff are qualified counsellors and social workers who handle personal situations with the appropriate sensitivity and privacy. Our volunteers receive guidance and training to ensure they can support our clients effectively. We strive to collaborate with relevant organisations to ensure seamless integration of our services with theirs, providing comprehensive support for our clients.

Now more than ever, with an ageing population, rising cost of living, isolation, and increasing numbers affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia conditions, we believe our services are crucial in ensuring a safety net for anyone over sixty-five feeling overwhelmed or at risk. If you are in a position to help, please use the donation app on our site to make a one-off gift or set up regular giving to support our important work. No older person should feel isolated or in trouble, and as a society, we should judge our level of civilisation by how well we treat our most vulnerable members.

Check out our blog regularly for practical tips, event info, personal stories, Q&As, and more. If you are interested in our work and services, we encourage you to share our articles and get involved with Age Concern Auckland.
