'1737': Need to talk? Free call or text 1737

The “Need to talk? toll-free helpline number, 1737, can be used for voice calls or text messages, and it provides access to the National Telehealth Service’s various 24/7 mental health helplines, including those for depression, addiction and problem gambling.

When a person calls the 1737 helpline, they are triaged by the call-taker, who uses an international clinical decision support tool, Odyssey Tele Assess, to determine what action needs to be taken.

That could be an immediate referral to emergency services, to a DHB mental health crisis team, to one of the National Telehealth Service’s counselling or peer support services, to a community group, or to a GP.

The service encompasses Healthline, Quitline, the Alcohol Drug Helpline, the Depression Helpline, Depression.org.nz, The Lowdown, The Journal, the Gambling Helpline, the National Poisons Centre helpline, and the Immunisation Advisory Centre helpline.
