As Matariki rises once again, we are reminded to pause, reflect on the year that has passed, remember those who are no longer with us, and look forward with hope for the year ahead. This year is especially significant, with Tāmaki Makaurau proudly hosting the national Matariki celebrations under the leadership of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. The national theme, Matariki Herenga Waka (the mooring/gathering of the many canoes) reminds us that we are strongest when we come together. It speaks to belonging, inclusion, shared purpose and the importance of every person having a place within our community. These values are at the heart of Age Concern Auckland. Every day, we work alongside older people across Auckland to reduce loneliness, strengthen connections and support people to age positively with dignity, independence and respect.
Matariki provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate these values and acknowledge the contribution our kaumātua make to our communities every day. For many, Matariki is a time to gather with whānau, share stories, prepare kai, remember loved ones, or simply enjoy quiet moments of reflection. These traditions help strengthen relationships across generations and remind us that our older people are the keepers of knowledge, culture and lived experience.
Here at Age Concern Auckland, our team will come together to celebrate Matariki, reflect on what we have achieved over the past year, and set our intentions for the year ahead. Taking time to connect with one another strengthens our own wellbeing and enables us to better support the older people and whānau who place their trust in us. When we care for each other, we strengthen our ability to care for others. By nurturing the wellbeing of our staff and volunteers through aroha, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, we continue to build a community where every older person feels seen, heard, valued and connected. We encourage everyone to take a moment this Matariki to celebrate in a way that is meaningful to them.
Whether that is sharing a meal, remembering someone special, spending time with friends and family, or attending one of the many free
community events taking place across Tāmaki Makaurau, every act of connection helps strengthen our communities. From everyone at Age
Concern Auckland, we wish you and your loved ones a peaceful and joyful Matariki.
