Volunteer FAQ

You could make a real difference — in just one hour a week

“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.”

Many older people in our communities experience loneliness and isolation. A simple weekly visit — a conversation, a shared activity, a friendly face — can have a lasting impact on someone’s wellbeing.

At Age Concern Auckland, volunteers are at the heart of what we do. We’ll support you every step of the way, so you can feel confident, safe, and valued in your role.

How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer?

Most volunteer visitor roles involve around one hour per week, depending on the programme and match.

Regular visits are important, as they help build trust and a meaningful connection over time.

Who can volunteer with Age Concern Auckland?

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds who want to support older people in Auckland.

You don’t need special qualifications — just reliability, empathy, and a willingness to listen.

What does a volunteer visitor do?

Volunteer visitors provide companionship and social connection to older people.

This may include:

  • Having conversations and sharing stories
  • Playing games or doing puzzles
  • Going for short outings (where appropriate)
  • Sharing hobbies or interests

The focus is on building a positive relationship — not providing personal care or support services.

How are volunteers matched with older people?

Our coordinators carefully match volunteers based on:

  • Location
  • Availability
  • Interests and personality
  • Individual needs

They also check in regularly to make sure the match is working well.

What training and support will I receive as a volunteer?

You’ll receive:

  • Initial training and onboarding
  • Ongoing support from a coordinator
  • Access to support meetings and resources
  • Regular updates and communication

We’re committed to making sure you feel safe, supported, and confident.

What are the boundaries of the volunteer role?

Volunteer visitors provide social connection only.

You should not:

  • Provide personal care or medical assistance
  • Handle money or finances
  • Do household chores
  • Accept valuable gifts

These boundaries help keep everyone safe and supported.

Is volunteering safe?

Yes — your safety is a priority.

You’ll receive guidance on staying safe, and if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can end a visit and contact your coordinator immediately.

What if I can’t attend a visit?

If you’re unable to attend:

  • Let the person you visit know as soon as possible
  • Inform your coordinator
  • Give advance notice for longer absences

Good communication helps maintain trust and continuity.

What happens after I sign up to volunteer?

After training, you will:

  • Complete a volunteer agreement
  • Receive your ID badge
  • Be matched with an older person
  • Begin regular visits

Your coordinator will guide you through each step.

Why is volunteering with older people important?

Loneliness can have a serious impact on wellbeing and health.

By volunteering, you help older people stay connected, feel valued, and remain part of their community. Even one hour a week can make a meaningful difference.
