Central and West

Age Concern Auckland delivers a range of Health Promotion activities that provide practical knowledge on topics to help older people to age well and stay independent, healthy and active. A list of the activities we offer in Central West are below, however you’ll need to contact the Central West office to enquire about the activity or workshop you are interested in and to register. Please note not all activities and workshops are available at all times.

The activities and workshops we offer are free and available to older people living independently. A koha towards expenses is always greatly appreciated and bookings are essential.

We can also come and present to groups you are involved in. If you are interested in having a Health Promotion presentation delivered to your seniors group in 2020, please email.

Workshops

My Home, My Choice – finding the best fit
For senior home owner-occupiers this is a research-based decision support tool designed to help older adults think through:

  • How to adapt their current home to live in or
  • Moving on in the future

Technology for Seniors/Keeping Connected
An opportunity for older adults to get individual instruction on their own devices e.g. mobile phones, laptops, tablets and ipads. 
This workshop provides the opportunity to learn at your own pace and find out as much or as little as YOU want.

Improving Sleep for Seniors (2 ½ hours)
This workshop is designed to assist older people with their own understanding of fatigue due to lack of quality sleep. It offers positive strategies and suggestions for improving hours of quality sleep. Date/Time: Wednesday 6 May, 10.00am-12noon

Seminars

Seminars are usually 2 to 2½ hours long and involve guest speakers sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Advance Care Planning
Peoples needs change as they age and there may come a time when a person is no longer able to make decisions or advocate for themselves. Many of us find thinking about the end of life difficult. This can mean we don't talk about it and don't put any plans in place for the future. This seminar provides very practical information on what an Advance Care Plan is, why we should have one, and the process to write one.

These interactive presentations and activities allow plenty of time for discussion and sharing.

Steady Steps (an introduction to falls prevention)
A short, interactive session with a power point presentation, introducing some facts about falls, causes and some strategies to reduce the risk of falling.

Hearing Awareness Presentation
This workshop will be run by trained Hearing Therapists in collaboration with Life Unlimited to provide information and encourage awareness of a range of hearing issues.

Multiple Week Programmes
Please note: as these programmes are held over four consecutive weeks, participants must be able to attend all four sessions at the time of registration.  

Seniors Eating Well (four weeks) Held over four consecutive weeks, 10.00am – 12.30pm
During this interactive presentation we will cover nutrition, strong bones, fibre and fluid, shopping and cooking for one or two, smart snacking, food safety, nutrition myths and kitchen equipment. You will come away with some delicious recipes and a manual with lots of helpful information. Includes food tasting.
